![]() ![]() ![]() He has a very extensive catalogue of SF works under his belt, most notably in his “Humanx Commonwealth” universe, which centres on an alliance between humans and the intelligent insectoid species the Thranx. However, Foster has done far more in his long career than merely re-work scripts into books. While novelisations are often thought of as one of the most low-brow forms of writing, Foster elevated the genre with his strong SF background and ability to expand upon scripts with additional detail. ![]() Later, Foster would novelise other important science fiction movies, including Alien (1979) and its first two sequels, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), Outland (1981), The Thing (1982), and Starman (1984). Most famously, Foster wrote the first ever Star Wars novel, a novelisation of the original film which was released much earlier than the big screen version, in November 1976. Quentin Tarantino once called Alan Dean Foster “the king of movie novelisations”, and it’s a fair description. ![]() ![]() ![]() My eyes aren’t exactly my most reliable source right now and the dark lighting makes it that little bit harder. I hold onto him as he pulls me over to Darryl, who sits on a purple looking couch-or maybe it’s pink. “Maybe not.” His warm hand engulfs my elbow. If only there were two of him…the things I would do…He smiles down at me, amused, and I realize I haven’t responded to his question. My eyesight sways and I see two of him before they merge back into one. ![]() He’s had as many shots as I have, but he seems hardly affected by the alcohol, unlike me. “Do you want another?” Seth shouts into my ear and I look at him over my shoulder. I love the atmosphere and the way excitement and anticipation hangs heavily in the air. Wherever it is, it’s loud, filled with people and exotic dancers in tiny cages and glass boxes. ![]() ![]() Stuart passed away in August at the age of 83, and what a legacy he has left, with what I still today consider the best children’s film of all time (even though, really, it’s a movie as much for adults as it is for kids), By the end of perusing this incredibly detailed and fascinating account of the 1971 film, I felt like I had been transported not just to the movie’s set, but like I had traveled to the magical chocolate factory rooms themselves. ![]() No, originally, I passed by the loaded, awesome books on film section at my local library and found a copy of Pure Imagination: The Making of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, by the film’s director Mel Stuart, and Josh Young. I didn’t initially intend to watch the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory again, and all the DVD’s bonus features. (Via Amazon)īrian’s Review: I didn’t initially intend to review this. Ingenious and entertaining, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a true modern classic. Only Charlie Bucket, the story’s earnest hero, stands to win the exotic riches of Wonka’s empire-if he avoids the pitfalls of his fellow contestants and stays true to his heart. When Willy Wonka’s hallowed chocolate factory holds a worldwide contest awarding tours to the lucky, five children emerge as winners, including a glutton, a gum- chewing nitwit, a spoiled brat, and a TV addict. ![]() SUMMARY: Twice turned into a feature film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a delectable classic about a child’s dreams and the eccentric chocolate-maker who makes them come true. ![]() ![]() If the first book is about setting the scene, then this one is definitely about building the relationships within the team, and also figuring out where all the franctures lie. Now I’m two books in, I’m not sure that’s entirely true. ![]() In my review of The Foxhole Court I said that it was what you would get if you were looking for a contemporary version of Six of Crows, with sport thrown in the mix. ![]() These books are ADDICTIVE like nothing I’ve read before. Also, I desperately don’t want to be writing anything because I want to immediately start the next one. But at the moment I feel like I’m trying to review a book halfway through. ![]() Normally when I review books in a series they still feel like distinct books. Neil’s days are numbered, but he’s learning the hard way to go down fighting for what he believes in, and Neil believes in Andrew even if Andrew won’t believe in himself. Riko is intent on destroying Neil’s fragile new life, and the Foxes have just become collateral damage. The two don’t have much time to come to terms with their situation before outside forces start tearing them apart. ![]() The one person standing in their way is Andrew, and the only one who can break through his personal barriers is Neil.Įxcept Andrew doesn’t give up anything for free and Neil is terrible at trusting anyone but himself. The Foxes are a fractured mess, but their latest disaster might be the miracle they’ve always needed to come together as a team. It is the story of a lost civilization: one that deserves to be lost but never forgotten. ![]() This book is about the Green Book: one annual traveler’s guidebook but so much more. Reading this book made it clear that my ignorance was part of the plan it made me complicit. I was naïve: totally unaware of pervasive racial oppression and an ever-present threat of violence that lay just below the surface, waiting to burst forth against children who didn’t look like me. I grew up in green, suburban neighborhoods running with my friends and blissfully unaware of how my country treated so many who did not enjoy our privileges and freedoms. ![]() Things I took for granted were legally denied to Black citizens, but this was not in any way part of my experience. This stubborn fact kept coming back to me as I read this book. ![]() ![]() ![]() The first involved a faithful adaptation of the novel that producer Jim Wilson sent Glazer while the pair worked on Sexy Beast. ![]() The world wondered what was next.įor a decade, he vanished behind a door marked Under the Skin, where events fell into three acts. It was also booed at the Venice film festival. With Under the Skin shelved, he swept on instead to his 2004 film Birth, an uneasily gorgeous tale of a young boy who might be the reincarnated husband of a New York widow (Nicole Kidman). Sexy Beast, with Ray Winstone playing a saveloy-tanned safecracker retired to the Costa Brava, was hailed as a surreal-ish modern classic. To recap: at the dawn of the noughties, he was cinema's coming man, adored for his witty, ingenious ads for Nike, Guinness and more. "I don't think I'm the right man to adapt a book," he says. Fair enough." We talk about literary adaptations. The boos don't matter: "Some people love it, some are repulsed. You think, what do I love? I love this." He puffs on an electronic cigarette. He has the fractionally dazed air of a rescued castaway. Interview phobia aside, Glazer is affable and open. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ī guide for understanding, deploying, and managing Internet Protocol version 6 The growth of the Internet has created a need for more addresses than are available with Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4)-the protocol currently used to direct almost all Internet traffic.
